The Alte Burg
A bulwark against more independence
The Alte Burg is a former electoral moated castle from the 13th century, which was originally surrounded by a wide moat and a circular wall. The ministerial family von der Arken had built a residential building on this site in 1185 on the remains of a Roman round tower. Heinrich II von Finstingen, Elector of Trier, then had the Alte Burg built from the residential building from 1277 as a stronghold against the independence efforts of the citizens of Koblenz.
Under Archbishops Johann VI von der Leyen and Johann Hugo von Orsbeck, extensions and reconstruction work took place. Under French rule, a tinware factory moved in here in 1806. in 1897 this closed again and the castle was sold to the city of Koblenz.
Today the Old Castle houses the Koblenz City Archives.
