Altenahr
The Ahr Castle Ruins in Altenahr
The ruins of Are Castle, a medieval stronghold first mentioned in 1121, rise high above Altenahr. The castle was restored after its destruction in 1714 and, in addition to the tower, the remains of a chapel and an uncovered well are waiting for you to explore.

Sinzig
Sinzig Castle
Sinzig Castle, built in 1854-1858 in neo-Gothic style, stands on the ruins of a medieval moated castle. Today it houses the local history museum and the restored tower room serves as a popular registry office. Cultural events are also held in the former salon.

Hiking Trails in the Ahr Valley

The Ahr Valley is a popular hiking region with varied nature: gentle hills, wild rocks and Mediterranean vineyards that characterize the landscape. Numerous hiking trails lead you through the valley and offer impressive views of the vineyards, gorges, idyllic forests and meadowed valleys.

Red Wine Hike
Set off and explore the 36 km red wine hiking trail, which picturesquely winds its way through the Ahr Valley. Enjoy breathtaking views and be inspired by the vineyards and slate cliffs where Germany's best Pinot Noirs thrive. Untouched by the 2021 floods, this trail runs between Altenahr and Bad Bodendorf and is waiting to be discovered!

The AhrSteig Trail
Embark on an adventure on the AhrSteig and experience sporty hikes along around 100 km of breathtaking views, impressive castle ruins and exciting alpine trails. Most sections are accessible again after the 2021 flood and are waiting to be explored on your unforgettable journey through nature!

Altenahr
The Teufelsloch
Hike to the "Devil's Hole" near Altenahr, a striking photo motif and an exciting destination for your discovery tour. According to legend, the devil created this hole when he hurled his grandmother through the rock face after she turned into an unruly woman. A mystical place that you should experience!

Dernau
Dernau Krausberg Tower
Climb the Krausberg, Dernau's local mountain, on an idyllic circular route along forest paths and trails. The ascent to the Krausberg tower is rewarded with a breathtaking 360° view. Look out for the white flag–if you see it, then refreshments await you in the Eifelverein Dernau hut!

Children's Hiking Trail: Lotta the Vineyard Snail
I am Lotta, the vineyard snail from the Ahr Valley. On this adventure trail, you will learn exciting facts about the animals and grapes of our region. With the hiking map and information boards, you can answer the questions and call yourself an Ahr Valley expert. There is an information flyer with a rally for children.

Detour to the Ahr Valley!
Discover the Ahr Valley on a relaxed journey by public transport and leave your car behind. The train takes you from Bad Bodendorf to Walporzheim, and the rail replacement service continues to Ahrbrück. If you are staying overnight in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, you will receive a guest card that allows you to use all VRM buses and trains free of charge. Alternatively, you can use regional transport with the Deutschlandticket.
